The Gift
Leica James

May 2006

I went into church one day
And knelt upon my knees
To thank God for all the blessings he gave
To our little family.

Deep in prayer, I lifted my head
And God came down the aisle.
He handed me a little pink box,
And how it made me smile!

I looked upon the little bow,
All pearly and white
And the shiny pink wrapping had crystals of gold.
It was a beautiful sight.

Admiring this gift from God,
I treasured the little pink box in my hands,
When all of a sudden He came back to me
And snatched it from my grasp.

My open hands are empty now,
The little pink box was gone.
I looked at God to ask him why?
Why this blessing he did bestow
Then take it back, leaving me all alone?

He looked at me without an answer.
He just cradled the box closely to his chest.
Then he slowly turned and walked away,
Leaving me with a broken heart
And an empty breast.

Comments: I wrote this poem for our baby Autumn Grace, who was stillborn on May 18, 2006 at 22 weeks. Her name means "a blessing or a gift from God in the Autumn of our lives," because I had a less than 5% chance of conceiving, and my husband and I are in our forties. This baby was so incredibly wanted and is now so incredibly missed.
