The Labor
Marsha S.
May 2003
I was so scared, this wasn’t how it was supposed to be
Inducing my labor, it was to have come naturally
It was not to have happened half way through
My fourth pregnancy, my son, whom I hardly knew
On June 11, 1997, I was admitted to start The Labor
Was given medication, left alone, nothing to savor
I was meeting my child for the first time
But he would not be born alive
On June 12, 1997, after 10 hours, my son had arrived
With only his mom and dad at his side
All was quiet, calm, sad
Except for the tears shed by his dad
My son was taken away to be cleaned and draped
In a blanket with a blue knit cap for presentation’s sake
He came to me looking so perfect and fine
All his diagnoses were in his head, his mind
We called our first son, our child, Sky
Releasing him to Heaven so he could run, he could fly
Without any limitations
Or society expectations
The Labor resulted in death before life
A shot stopped my son’s heart
My loss brought me much strife
The Labor, which started so scary and unjust
Had brought me full circle, had led me to trust
To believe in myself and my intention
Of releasing my child to Heaven’s dimension
Comments: I have experienced 7 pregnancies: 3 miscarriages, 3 living children and the loss of a child due to a termination for poor prenatal diagnosis/medical reasons. I hope that the feelings I express in my poems help others who face this difficult decision. Take care. Marsha Salome
