Who Art In Heaven
Lauren Rutigliano

February 2006

Who Art In Heaven
I don’t know how to start
Don’t know how to explain,
The aching of my soul
The unbelievable pain.

The life that was within me
Is now in Heaven above
My son who I will never know
How I pray he feels my love

I know God has a plan for us
And that this was meant to be,
But try to tell that to my heart
It is broken now, you see.

There are no words
There are no prayers to alleviate this ache,
The ignorant ones are killing me
There’s just so much I can take
It does not matter how far along
In your pregnancy you were,
You have lost a child,
You will forever mourn him or her.
Always I will remember
The innocent joy I knew
When my eyes fell upon that little stick
And those lines, those beautiful two.

I was going to be a Mother,
My blessed day had come,
Then the Dr. Said it was over,
And just like that, it was done.

As I lay there in my hospital bed
My dear husband by my side
The tears were streaming down my face
Ones I fought so hard to hide.

And when I awoke I prayed to God
That it all had been a dream
Though all too soon I realized
How very real it had been.

I will never forget the day
My child was taken from me
And though his face I ‘ll never see
His Mother I shall always be.

Comments: I wrote this a few weeks after going through a D & C for the miscarriage of my first pregnancy in my 10th week.
