For Cole
Tania Chappell

January 2003

Before i could say hello,
I said goodbye.
Before i could see your beautiful face,
You had faded.
Before i could hear you cry,
You were silenced.
Before we could build your future,
It was gone.
Before i could hold you,
You were taken.
Before i could share my life with you,
yours was ended.
Before i could count your toes,
They were wrapped.
Before i could kiss your hands,
They were hidden.
Before i could look into your eyes,
They were closed.
Beforre i could lay you on my beating heart,
Yours was stilled.
But not before i could love you.
Not before you became my world-
my baby, my son.
So i say to you now,
In my mind and in my heart -
"Hello. i love you.
Goodbye."
