A Prayer for Baby Grayson
Erika N. Wentworth
June 2006
We prayed for days before he came,
Saying, “Lord, please let him be okay.”
We cried the day that he was born,
Saying, “Thank you. Thank you Lord.”
We prayed for him when he was ill,
Saying, “Please Lord, we want him still.”
He fought so hard, but he couldn’t stay.
We cried the day he slipped away.
He drifted away to a far better place,
And we still cry, and now I pray…
“Lord, keep him safe and warm,
Wrapped up in your arms.
Kiss him when he cries,
And sing him lullabies.”
“Lord, give him a cloud so soft and white,
Where he can rest his head at night
And he may be afraid of the dark,
So maybe you could light just one extra star.”
“Lord, if he gets sad and misses me,
Please tell him I love him and rock him to sleep.
Make sure he knows this place in our hearts
Will always be his and was from the start.”
“Lord, give him an angel to stay by his side,
To love and protect him his “Heavenly guide.”
And please be sure to hold his hand,
As he walks through the Promised Land.”
“Lord, tell him about his mom and dad,
About the hopes and dreams for him we had.
Please tell him we’ll be together again,
As soon as it’s our time to join him in Heaven.”
“Lord, though we got to have him for only nineteen days,
Tell him how he changed us how we’ll never be the same.
And tell him that we will never forget,
No matter how old or frail we get.”
“Lord, if he sees us crying, tell him they’re tears of joy,
Because he was, and always will be, our precious little boy.
Please let him visit me each night in my dreams,
To show me he’s happy and healthy and at peace.”
“Lord, tell him we love him each and every day,
That this ache in our hearts will never go away.
Please give him kisses from his father and mother,
And tell him to take care of his sister or brother.”
“Lord, as for me and what I need,
I know you know the rest.
But as for my sweet, little Grayson,
His mommy still knows best.”
